Jony's Wrap Up || Saturday, 23 March

Nothing is ever the same here at TAS.

We're constantly trying to adapt and evolve - I feel like that's the theme of this Saturday wrap up every week haha.

So fun to work around people who always want to be better. Here's how we tested ourselves this week and how we will continue to test in the near future!

  • 5 weeks into writing this newsletter and recording YAP podcast. Thankful for the base structure but tweaks are still being made to enhance your experience <3

  • We're back baby! TAS content is at full capacity. Doesn't mean we're slowing down - you'll see how we're tryna amp it up.

  • We're trying to get over our rough patch with LinkedIn. We think she's warming up to us again.

  • Cool cool shit - There's haps with Six60. We launched a dating show??? And our team spoke for The Marketing Club. Nice.

All in all, I feel like I come out of every week a new human. So much change and growth. Busy but, rewarding mwahahaha.

Enjoy your weekend. I think I'm gonna sleep for the next 2 days xo

LET’S BREAK IT DOWN:

Your ATTN Please

We've officially finished Week 5 of the newsletter--woohoo!

So what went well?

  • We've been working ahead because of the Easter break coming up. We've realised that it's possible to do this all the time so we're never leaving the writing to the last minute.

  • I now have 2 interns helping me do research. This is saving our team a lot of time so we can focus on the actual writing.

  • We've cross promoted with 2 other newsletters. This is part of our growth strategy so it's exciting to get it up and running.

What could have gone better?

  • We want to make our case studies more brand focused rather than influencer focused. We think this will be more relevant for all of you.

  • We want to make our pop culture section more helpful. For example, if we're talking about St. Patrick's Day, we want to share links of what brands did well last year.

This week, we did some research to see how our stats stack up compared to other newsletters. It turns out, we were judging ourselves based on arbitrary numbers we made up. In reality, our newsletter is growing well and we're happy with where we are.

We're in a constant process of refining and iterating on what we're doing. Please let us know what you want to see more of in the newsletter so we can make it better for you!

YAP Podcast

We got banned from Live!

We aren’t even sure what it was for? Apparently it was for hate speech but we can’t even think what it could be. Which points to a bigger problem with TikTok as it's the most censored platform.

So what went well?

  • We've made 25 episodes so far and everyday they are getting a little bit better.

  • We’ve added briefing docs so it’s easier for Jony and I to be prepared each day and give more value to the audience.

  • We started going live (although we're currently banned for a week). We’ll probably start going live on other platforms, too.

  • The interns are now in the room with us while we are filming to help with production. This also means we have other characters to play off.

What could have gone better?

  • We’ve realised that it might be better if we spoke more to brand content and how businesses are using the platform. We often speak about influencers and one off viral videos but this content isn’t relatable to most businesses. So we will change this up next week.

  • We also think we are adding too much into the podcast, which means we’re giving less value. Next week, we will try highlighting one creator or brand each day and digging into their content a lot more.

This week we started experimenting with Collab posts on instagram and saw how much better they perform than our normal posts.

My Stansplaining posts have gotten tens of thousands of views and generated 100 new followers this week. So, now it’s time to do the same for the YAP podcast. It seems like a simple change but actually there are a lot of internal system changes we have to make to have this work.

TAS Short-form Video Storylines

TAS has spent the last week gaining momentum again on socials and now we're back to refining. Stan has also found some new findings on how to grow IG.

So what went well?

  • My briefs for TAS videos have been more direct and leave room for anyone's creative interpretation. Now we're getting more volume from multiple people.

  • Stan has found a way to grow viewership on IG with something we should've been doing before — collab posts. Content collaborating with other people's accounts has boosted Stan's numbers and allowed us to tap into new audiences that we haven't before.

  • Camila (intern) has been trying to improve Stan's talking head watch time second by second. This week, they trialled posting a 10 second clip and we retained FULL retention for just under 50% of viewers! Way to go Camila!

What could have gone better?

  • There hasn't been a running storyline since the budget leak... All of our TAS content has been service pieces to keep you guys in the loop. It's time to bring a boss vs. employee storyline back into the mix.

  • We're still looking into how to organically incorporate talking about our newsletter and YAP podcast in our content.

TAS content has some development to do, but the quantity has given us the momentum to now look at our next big thing. Continuing to improve content in 1% increments has provided us learnings to have exponential results. Do the reps and the results will follow!

Our LinkedIn Woes Continue…

Womp womp. This has been a bit of a hard one for us and we haven't made as much progress as we'd like on the platform.

So what went well?

  • We got a lot more viewership due to a post that Stan shared about Brooke and how she made the leap from intern to full-time employee at TAS.

  • We were also much better at testing out different things to figure out what sticks, which is a success in itself, I think. Did any of them work? Well no. But now we can make better decisions as we carry on.

  • We’re still experiencing consistent follower growth.

What could have gone better?

  • Getting the team onboard. We will need to give them the tools to write on their personal LinkedIns to expand our reach across the platform.

  • The data shows spikes in viewership every time Stan talks about the team and his business journey. So we will need to double down on that content to see if it still resonates with his audience on the platform.

  • The comment section also tells us that people are more engaged when Stan transparently speaks about his thought process when it comes to making big business decisions for TAS. So we will be experimenting with that as well.

  • As a whole, our testing has pointed to a need to rework Stanley's LinkedIn approach in a way that will tell us who his current audience is.

Honestly, our grasp on LinkedIn is still a work in progress. Although Stanley's post about Brooke and our experimentation efforts have provided heaps of insights, we're still navigating the platform change.

That said, we remain undeterred and believe that by rallying the team together and focusing on understanding our audience first and foremost, we'll be able to crack the code.

TAS IRL

As much as we try to capture all our shenanigans for your entertainment, sometimes cool sh*t happens offline.

Here's what's gone down at TAS IRL this week:

The team filmed with Six60 this week. A few of our video team members got a private show from Six60 to create content for their socials. Be on the lookout for some acoustic tunes on your feed soon.

We opened applications to our new show, The Dating Void. Think blind dating + a live audience. It’s the first show we’re producing solely in the media side of our business. We already received over 100 applicants from sexy singles in the Auckland area.

Nate left for London and Elaine was away this week, too. That meant Stan had to step into the “boss” role a lot more. He’s definitely missing his fellow leaders.

We hosted The Marketing Club last night at the TAS offices. Think drinks, nibbles, and marketing girlies. The perfect night in my opinion. Three of our very own, Stan, Jony, and Mel spoke at the event. I’ll tell you all about it next week.
