The cannabis industry’s had a glow up.
A hobby that used to be reserved for skaters in baggy jeans is now one enjoyed by stockbrokers named Chad.
More and more bougie (read: corporate) cannabis brands are coming on the scene. But will this mean the erasure of the weed subculture that once was?
In today's newsletter:
Smoking weed’s gone corporate (wait, is this a good thing or not?)
Domino’s has the remedy for pizza emergencies (plus, why they’re partnering with a nail care brand??)

Smoking Weed’s Gone Corporate

Smoking cannabis used to be reserved for baggy-jeaned skateboarders. Now, because of corporate interest, it's become mainstream--and the market's full of minimalist brands targeting execs in suits. But has this new 'corporate' side of the industry changed pot culture forever?
I’m convinced that enough corporate interest can make even the most fun things bland and dry.
Corporations can sometimes be like the scorpion who gets a ride across the river on the frog’s back and stabs the frog in midstream.
'What have you done?' asks the dying frog. 'Now we’re both going to die.'
'I can’t help it,' says the scorpion. 'It’s simply my nature.'
That’s what profit without regard looks like.
And now, they’ve officially made smoking pot unfun.
I don’t partake. However, there was a time when sparking up a joint was one of the most subversive moves one could make. Exciting, thrilling, a little bit naughty.
That hasn’t been the case for a long time.
Not since dispensaries got a full capitalist makeover and celebrities started releasing their own strains of cannabis like they do beauty brands.
Now, cannabis brands are aplenty.
You’d think this would be a good thing – the normalisation of a practice that has long been demonised in society. And, in a way, it is.
But just look at the sheer number of bougie, clean, minimalist cannabis brands that now flood the market float in a sea of sameness. If you didn’t know any better, you’d think they were selling artisanal almond snacks or something wanky of the sort.

Domino’s Has the Remedy for Pizza Emergencies

Domino's has relaunched its 'Emergency Pizza' promo so their customers can get a free pizza when they need it the most (?). After a decline in revenue, the chain has also launched a collab with nail care brand Olive & June. But will these gimmicky campaigns mean a rise in profits next quarter?
I have never once in my life experienced an emergency that required pizza.
Dominos apparently disagrees.
This week, the chain announced the return of its ever-popular 'Emergency Pizza' promo, which originally launched last year.
The deal goes as follows:
Any customer can score a free, medium, two-topping pizza 'to use whenever they need it most,' when they order online or via digital carry out and spend $7.99 or more. The offer is valid until Jan. 19, 2025, and must be redeemed within 30 days via a customer’s Domino’s rewards account.
Apparently, Dominos is the remedy for when life gets you a little down in the dumps.
'Life can throw unexpected curveballs, and sometimes a hot, delicious pizza is just what you need to turn things around,' said Kate Trumbull, Domino’s Senior VP, in a statement.
However, I suspect declining sales over the last several months may have something to do with giving away millions of free pizzas. Idk, just a hunch.

Trend Plug - I’m Stupid

The greatest comedian and social media presence of all time, 'Dax Flame,' has given us another amazing meme sound to use.
The sound is of Dax telling us how much disappointment he has in himself.
He says things like, 'Gonna take a quick selfie. Oh broke the camera cause I'm ugly' or 'I hate myself, I'm an idiot.' (Obviously, none of those things are true because Dax is the most perfect human of us all.)
TikTokers are using this sound to show times they're disappointed in themselves. Some examples are, 'when I send my friends a snapchat vlog and they leave me on opened' or 'me when my friends don't laugh at a joke I found really funny.'
How to jump on this trend:
Simply, use this sound. Describe something you've done that was so embarrassing that you started rethinking your entire existence. (Which, if I'm guessing, there are lots of those, teehee.)
A few ideas to get you started:
Me when I finally build up the courage to speak during a meeting and my point is completely ignored
Me when I come up with a suggestion for a client and they say 'yea sort of, you're on the right track'
Me after the person I was answering wasn't even speaking to me

Ask the Editor

Q - I've just started a dog training business and I'm trying to get my name out there in a couple Facebook groups. What advice do you have for me? - Benny
Hey Benny!
If you haven't already, you need to really think about where your target audience hangs out. If you're focusing on FB right now, you want to make sure you're in groups that are full of potential clients. For you, that might be local dog walking groups or ones focused on learning to train your puppy (the search bar is your friend!).
Then, the key is to invest time in being active in the group. Answer questions and give good advice in your area of expertise. You can also make educational (NOT SALESY) posts with genuinely helpful information based on your experience. If you do this enough, people will start to recognise you, and you will get tagged when others ask questions about dog training.
Use those opportunities to continue to show your expertise. When it makes sense, you can offer your services. It will take time to build your network and reputation this way, but it will work!
