How to Get Your Customers to Build Your Brand (for free!)

User-generated content (UGC) builds trust and showcases genuine love for your brand, making it a super powerful marketing tool. The first step in getting your audience to make UGC is to understand what they care about most and how that connects to your product or service.

Some things in life are just better when you don’t have to make them yourself.

A cup of tea from a loved one. A home cooked meal.

Maybe that’s also why the best content is content not made by you. It’s made by your customers.

User-generated content doesn't just build trust and foster organic relationships with your audience. It’s also an authentic snapshot of everyday love for your brand.

Seeing our customers happily engaging with our product or service is the crème de la crème for business owners. And if they are willingly sharing that excitement, even better.

This is why UGC can be such a powerful tool for your brand—someone else is building your brand for you.

I mean, let’s be real, it’s easier for someone who has no experience with your product or service to trust a recommendation over a curated advert. The challenge, however, is getting your customers to actually make the content.

So how do you get your customers to create UGC for your brand?

Why the World Went Crazy for Fidget Spinners (it was all marketing, baby!)

The fidget spinner craze of 2017 exploded thanks to viral marketing on TikTok and YouTube. But beyond their virality, the success of fidget spinners shows how using the four P’s of marketing—place, price, product, and promotion—can skyrocket a product to fame, almost overnight.

I know fidget spinners were made to combat negative emotions, but I think the craze of 2017 gave me some kind of PTSD.

I mean, you could not escape them. They infiltrated every space possible. At Uni. At work. On the bus.

I’d go to visit my little sister, and she had 8 different versions. And I’d have to tediously sit through listening to her tell me about each one.

Fidget spinners were flying off the shelves. Merchants literally couldn’t keep them in stock.

Then overnight, they were gone.

Except, they weren’t. The fidget spinner had simply diversified into other 'fidget toys' which are still wildly popular today. We just hear less about them (thank God.)

But, believe it or not, I’m not just writing about these products to trigger myself.

The phenomenon of the fidget spinner craze speaks volumes about the 4 P's of marketing.

Their popularity is proof that, if used right, these principles can be the ultimate framework for success.

So, let's break these 4 P's down to figure out how fidget spinners pulled this world takeover off.

Trend Plug - Life is Worth Living

9 years later, Justin Bieber's 'Life is worth living' has come to life and has become its very own TikTok trend

TikTokers are using this sound to show us why 'Life is worth living.' But the examples they give as to why life is worth living are really dumb things. In fact, most people are using the sound to show us their favourite meals.

How to jump on this trend:

Even though the general consensus is to use the sound to show off food, there is no reason why you can't use it for literally anything. So use this sound, use 'life is worth living' as your onscreen text, and show us what makes your life worth living.

A few ideas to get you started:

  • An email from your boss/client praising you

  • Making/buying a coffee

  • Closing all your open tabs at the end of the day

Q - Any tips on how to stay consistent with content? - Malakai

Hey Malakai!

Ah yes, the elusive hack to posting consistently. This is a question I get often, because it is really hard to be consistent on social media! My short answer is there's no magic formula to staying consistent--at some point you just have to carve out time and get it done. But there are a few things you can do to make that a bit easier.

One of the best tips I can give you (something I've learned from our content queen, Jony) is to come up with an easily repeatable content style. At TAS, we call this ERC. This is a content style that is easy to produce, and, ideally, one you can create in bulk. It should also be something you can do endlessly, only changing one factor each time.

Think street interviews, simple games, reaction videos, talking heads answering FAQs about your industry...Your ERC will need to fit your niche.

When you've got this content style, you'll no longer need to reinvent the wheel every time you need to create content. You're essentially taking 90% of the thinking out of it, which makes it much more likely you're going to create content more regularly.

Then, remember that done is better than perfect. You will learn as you go, and that's ok. So stop overthinking and start doing!
