WhatsApp Says Goodbye to the Green Bubble Stigma

WhatsApp's new ad featuring Modern Family characters promotes the app as the solution to the green bubble struggle. By tapping into common frustrations, the campaign shows how WhatsApp brings people together.

Are you a victim of…

*Looks around and lowers voice to a whisper*

Do you have that One Person in your family that refuses to be normal and ruins all the group chats with their *shivers* Android?

Are you tired of sacrificing full resolution images, read receipts, and likes?

Or maybe, you are the green bubble…

*Everyone gasps*

WhatsApp says fear no more.

Because now you can avoid Apple’s clever colour-differentiation strategy and group chat MMS limitations.

Meaning, no more green bubble stigma.

Which has been a thing since Apple rolled out its superiority complex marker (iMessage) in 2011.

The truth, however, is that the rivalry between Android and iPhone users is a tale as old as time. The group chat argument is one in a very long list of 'ours is better' ammo for each side.

So WhatsApp's new commercial featuring the cast from Modern Family is here to settle things once and for all.

TikTok Brings AI ‘Creators’ to Ads

TikTok's new Symphony digital avatars let you choose - or create - digital avatars to feature in your ads. This means you can now bulk create multilingual ads. However, the AI avatars may not be as human as you’d like them to be.

TikTok's unveiled a new method of reaching audiences in an 'authentic way'--AI avatars of real people.

The platform recently rolled out Symphony, its generative AI-powered ad suite. And now, you can create Digital Avatars through the app. The avatars are designed to help you create several ads at once. Not only that, but the app can help you generate multilingual content so your ads can reach a global audience.

There are two types of avatars to choose from:

First, there's Stock Avatars. These are pre-built AI avatars created using paid actors which are licensed for commercial use. TikTok boasts that ad creators can choose avatars from 'a diverse range of backgrounds, nationalities, and over 30 languages.'

The other option is a Custom Avatar. That's right, you can use your own likeness (or that of a brand spokesperson) to make a multilingual and multipurpose AI avatar.

There are some great opportunities for marketers here.

Trend Plug - Is This Camera On?

The 'Is This Camera On?' trend originates from a scripted YouTube video in the 2019 comedy horror series Killer Bae.

The viral clip is from Episode 12, where a comedic exchange between a reporter and an unreliable witness who 'didn't see nothin’.'

The audio's resurfaced and now, TikTok creators are using it to add humour to various scenarios, like when their mum asks if they saw their cousin sneaking out last night.

How to jump on this trend:

Using this sound, film yourself lip-syncing the man’s lines from the script. Start by pretending to talk to someone off-camera and then deliver the line, 'Is this camera on?' while looking into the camera.

Add onscreen text to describe a scenario where you’re being asked to be a witness to something humorous or absurd.

A few ideas to get you started:

  • 'When the client asks why your colleague didn’t attend the meeting last week'

  • 'When my manager asks if I like the new intern’s design'

  • 'When I see someone download a torrented design app'

Ask the Editor

Q - I'm in charge of all the content creation for the charity I work for. Should I repurpose the content I make across as many platforms as possible? - Wes

Hey Wes!

I know it can be tempting to create one piece of content and repost it everywhere. And while some things can be repurposed, it's not always the best way to do things. Every platform has a different culture, so what fits one may not work for another.

My suggestion is to choose 1-2 platforms where your target audience is and focus on doing those really well. Create tailored content for each one and spend time engaging with your audience there.

This doesn't mean you can never repurpose anything. But if you're primarily creating each piece of content for a particular platform, it's a lot more likely to resonate with your audience there.

Even when you do want to use something in multiple places, you may want to change the caption, onscreen text, etc. to suit where you're posting it. It takes a bit more effort, but it's well worth it.
