So, What’s the Tea?

January loved us and left us faster than most of my situation-ships.

But before you freak out at the passage of time slipping through your fingers, there are things to be excited about!!

Like, the first-ever drop of our newsletter! It seems like everyone else had the same idea, too. We've got some other fire releases in the mix.

Beyoncé's gone country! Her new release, "Texas Hold'em", is a powerful song that has the potential to reshape the landscape of country music. So how can you and your brand be part of this movement? By embracing inclusivity and authenticity in your content! If you’re a larger brand, you could collaborate with rising stars like Brittney Spencer.

You can also spotlight lesser-known Black artists who shaped the genre, like Charley Pride. No matter the size of your brand, you can jump on the bandwagon of relevant social media trends like this viral clip from Dexter Mayfield.

Dune: Part Two releases 29th Feb. The epic saga continues as Paul Atreides embraces his destiny, facing greater challenges than ever before. Here’s some simple ideas on how to ride this wave if it’s relevant for you and your brand.

  • Themed product photography: Showcase your products in a Dune-inspired setting or style, aligning with the movie's visuals and themes (e.g., desert landscapes, futuristic tech, etc.).

  • Creative storytelling: Develop short, branded stories inspired by Dune's themes like resource scarcity, adaptation, or societal struggles. Subtly integrate your brand's message throughout.

  • Dune-inspired quotes and references: Use iconic quotes or references from the movie in your content. Just make sure it’s done in a relevant and respectful way (no direct copying or misleading associations!).

National Margarita Day (February 22nd): Speaking of fire releases, last year The Margarita Song made waves. This Margarita Day is a great opportunity to bring it back! If you’re in the hospo industry, this is the perfect day to offer deals and promotions on margaritas. You could also create some margarita-themed content. Think recipe videos or polls asking your followers for their favourite margarita flavours. If you’re not in hospitality, why not host an office party Thursday night to mark the occasion? Just don’t forget to stock up on painkillers for the next day.

Making a Million $ Newsletter

Morning Brew, with its almost 3,000,000 subscribers, sold for USD$75,000,000 a few years ago in a record-breaking deal. They were able to do this due to a couple of impressive stats.

Here they are:

  • Open rate of over 40%

  • 15% click-through rate

  • $20M in revenue

  • $6M in profit

But what they did wasn't necessarily groundbreaking.

They're just one of many newsletter media companies that have been catching headlines lately for their impressive acquisitions or revenue numbers.

Morning Brew just implemented a strategy and executed it perfectly.

So why are email newsletters so profitable?

  • Because of how their advertising is priced. For a lot of ads, advertisers pay per impression or click. But with email databases, the common way to pay is per subscriber. This is significant because not all subscribers open an email so not all of them will see the ad or click it. This means you're being paid for just growing a subscriber list.

  • Because of the price advertisers are willing to pay. The average cost per 1,000 subscribers sitting around USD$10-30. This means an email database with 1,000,000 subscribers could get $10,000 - $30,000 per ad and might have 3 ads per email. If you're emailing your list every day, it adds up real quick.

  • Because they're very good at getting people to click through to other places. For us, we don't need to monetize our newsletters with ads (this isn't how we make our money). But we can use our emails to promote our podcasts, social media channels, events we're hosting, books we write, etc.

This is why we've decided to go all in on newsletters this year.

So how are we going to build this database? Great question.

And I won't answer that today. But stay tuned and we'll get into it tomorrow.

Until next time.
