Ever made a client cry?

It's ok. We do it all the time.

But we think that's actually a good thing. Today you'll read what we do in our client discovery sessions and why getting them to cry is a win in our books.

In today's newsletter:

  • Remembering Akira Toriyama, creator of Dragon Ball-Z (it’s time to join the thousands paying their respects)

  • Grand Theft Auto VI is almost here (here’s how to join the hype in your content)

  • How to find the golden nuggets for your clients' campaigns (because it's harder than it looks!)

  • KWESCHENS with Mel (you won't believe the naughty moment she shares!)

  • What will make paid ads disappear forever?

So, What’s the Tea?

Today, we start our Pop Culture section on a sadder note than usual.

Because we’re paying our respects to one of the most influential artists to grace our pages and television screens.

Akira Toriyama, creator of Dragon Ball-Z, has passed away.

For many of us here at TAS, DBZ was a cornerstone of our childhood.

And the same can be said for the rest of the world, with tributes bursting from every corner for the beloved icon.

From Jackie Chan to the President of the French Republic, the online fan community has poured their hearts out. Crowds of up to 30,000 people have taken to the streets to express their love and gratitude.

And you can do the same! If DBZ has had an impact on your life, create content paying your respects to the legend that was Akira Toriyama.

As one icon leaves this world, another returns.

And we welcome this one with arms wide open.

Grand Theft Auto VI has the gamer community buzzing for its long-awaited release early next year.

Considering GTA V came out in September 2013, the hype is REAL.

With a history spanning two decades, each new release brings fresh excitement. And each one reinstates the game's status as one of the most popular games to date.

While the release details are secret, fans are speculating about what the creators, Rockstar Games, have up their sleeve. The internet has exploded with memes about the game's release.

Rockstar has my entire generation on the edge of its seat as we wait for more crime, chaos, and adventure.

If you're as excited as I am, join the conversation in your content!

  • Take a stab at guessing how you think the game will have evolved

  • Create hilarious video content mimicking new potential characters

  • Join the meme circulation by taking a shot at your age and how long you've waited for the release

Give Me 2 (ok, maybe 4) Hours of Your Time

The only way we can create a personal brand for our clients is by climbing into their skin and walking around a bit. Our discovery process is designed to help us understand their challenges, values, and triggers so we can create a successful campaign.

We’re not mind readers or psychics! So before we start working with a new client, we go through an intense discovery process. And if you do marketing for your clients, you should be doing the same.

Here’s how to make sure you get to those golden nuggets that will become the cornerstone of their campaign.

Make time (and lots of it!)

There are no shortcuts to getting to know your clients! So for us, our discovery process starts with a 2-4 hour chat. Lots of clients ask why we need so much time. Do they need to prep? What are they expected to talk about for two (or worse, four) hours?! Can't they just fill in a form instead? Well, no.

That’s why we like to think of it as a “date” between us and them. If you were on a real date and wanted to get to know someone, would simply filling in a form be ok? Hopefully your answer is no!

Get ready to listen. Like reeeaaallly listen.

Once you’ve got that time with them, you need to get them chatting. And making people feel comfortable spilling their guts to strangers is a skill! During your discovery session, let them tell you their life story. Don't interrupt. Take notes, focusing on their values and challenges as these will shape their online persona and voice.

Look for the gold.

Reflect those values and themes you pick up back to your client. Most of us aren’t used to being heard and seen deeply. And hardly any of us know how to tell a story, even when it's our own. So this experience can be very emotional!

Client reactions range from:

Epiphanies - "Sh*t! I really didn’t realise how much I’ve done to get to where I am."

Exclamations - "This is psychotherapy!" (which we know it is not -- it's catharsis at best)

Emotional outbursts - Sometimes tears, yes, even from grown men.

Going through this process means we can create a personal brand that’s authentic to each client. But that’s not the only reason the discovery is so important.

It’s the first point in our relationships with clients. And it’s how we begin developing what we pride ourselves for above just personal branding — having deeply personal relationships with our clients.

Q - Are paid ads dead? - Keziah

Hi Keziah,

No they aren't! Yes, we talk about building attention through organic content. But, for a lot of businesses, that's just too hard and time-consuming. They aren’t going to put their resources into organic content the way we do at TAS.

As long as big companies are using paid ads, they aren't going anywhere. Even if a bunch of large corporations pulled their Google ads, the ad price would drop and other companies would jump at the bargain. Which means they would become popular again anyway.

The only way paid ads would disappear would be if platforms like Google or YouTube lost all their users. And since they are the top two websites in the world, that doesn't seem very likely!
